Parched

It’s midday~

the sun is blazing overhead in a cream colored sky.

Heat radiates from the parched dirt; presses down from the trees that provide little respite from the atmospheric oven.

The head throbs, eyes burn, and nostrils flare from the smell of distant forest fires.

Today’s record heat index is 104 degrees. It wilts freshly pressed clothes, as one walks from the baking parking lot to the office.

Kids run half- heartedly through the sprinklers; faces a mixture of water and sweat.

Birds are quiet and cicadas are still in the midday heat~

another three months of summer in Florida.
