Winter’s Last Laugh

Yesterday the sun was warm on my bare arms as I walked along the riverbank.

Yesterday the sky was aqua blue, like a pool in the middle of July.

Yesterday birds filled the sky with their raucous sounds.

Yesterday a boat skimmed along the calm waters of the river.

Yesterday we shed our sweaters, shoes and socks and exposed our tender, white feet for the first time, because yesterday Spring reminded us of long, summer days to come.

Today the river was choppy, and covered with a gray mist.

Today the wind howled and the sun refused to shine.

Today the birds stay hovered under the cover of new leaves, silent and shivering.

Today we bundled up and kept our heads down.

Today Winter had the last laugh.
