Quitting Time

Transition time could also be called “don’t get too comfortable time.”

This seems to happen the minute I begin to feel confident.  I am juggling all the balls with relative ease, and some joker tosses me a watermelon.

I spent my summer working carefully on my change in attitude. I practiced the art of detachment. I vowed to take better care of myself physically, mentally, and feed my soul with my passion- writing.

Too many things were thrown at me in four short weeks. Every time I turn around, something else was lobbed my way.

I’m juggling as best I can, but I’m wearing myself out trying to keep every ball in the air.

So when do we decide, enough is enough?  How long do we try to do it all before something finally gives?

This is a difficult decision if you are a typical modern woman- the one who can multi-task, and make it all look effortless.

I was taught that is what is expected of women. It’s our role in life to keep everyone else’s ball spinning effortlessly.

Then there is the mindset that quitting is not an option. It’s practically  un-American to give up too soon.

But sometimes deciding to quit, to walk away from the thing that gives you intensely negative feelings is an act of strength.

Transition time is a period of taking stock, of dropping some of those balls that aren’t vital to your happiness, or well-being.

Sometimes it’s a good idea to quit while you’re ahead.
